Admiral Chester W. Nimitz was selected as commander of the US Pacific fleet, ten days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
He assumed the position in the most critical period of the Pacific War and he managed to develop and successfully implement key battle strategies to stop the Japanese attack.
One of the most important qualities that led him to success was the mutual loyalty he shared with his staff, especially with Admiral Kimmel, who did not blame him for replacing him in command after the disaster.
